{"id":7715,"date":"2021-05-23T22:40:17","date_gmt":"2021-05-24T02:40:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/?p=7715"},"modified":"2021-05-23T23:20:44","modified_gmt":"2021-05-24T03:20:44","slug":"365237-do-2-rights-1-wrong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/365237-do-2-rights-1-wrong\/","title":{"rendered":"365+#237: Do 2 Rights offset 1 Wrong?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Days-365207-Coronavirus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6773\" src=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Days-365207-Coronavirus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"93\" height=\"91\" \/><\/a><strong>I\u2019m not irresponsible.<\/strong> I\u2019ve avoided eating in restaurants during the Covid pandemic.<br \/>\n<strong>Nor am I stupid.<\/strong> I know that foam takeout food containers (often incorrectly called Styrofoam) are not good for our environment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BUT<\/strong>, I knew that our local restaurants were in economic peril from a lack of customers and I wanted to support local businesses, so a few weeks ago we ordered carry-out from our favorite restaurant.<br \/>\n<strong>BUT<\/strong>, I didn\u2019t realize how many foam takeout containers this would involve.<br \/>\nSo, do two good intentions cancel out the ecological failing of using difficult, if not impossible, to recycle foam containers?<\/p>\n<p><strong>IT\u2019S COMPLICATED<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAs explained in previous blog posts (See Plastics <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/365222-plastics-is-it-worth-it-2\/\">#222<\/a><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/365223-reducing-sups-3\/\">#223<\/a><\/span>, and <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/365224-plastics-prevention-4\/\">#224<\/a><\/span>) Recycling should not be the first choice of conscientious consumers. It\u2019s better to reduce unnecessary purchases by living simply and repair or reuse stuff when possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BUT<\/strong>, ultimately if the choice is between a recyclable item going to a landfill, littering our land, polluting our water, etc. OR recycling it, it\u2019s better to recycle than just put it in the garbage. Of course, municipal curbside recycling is convenient and the right thing to do when reduce and reuse aren\u2019t possible.<br \/>\n<strong>BUT<\/strong>, curbside recycling doesn\u2019t accept many items like plastic bags, plastic clam shells, electronics, bathroom tiles, and foam takeout containers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2 SOLUTIONS:<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 <\/strong>The plastic bags are easy. Many supermarkets have recycling containers for plastic bags and similar plastic film.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7723\" style=\"width: 103px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Days-365237-HUB-Bath-tiles.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7723\" class=\" wp-image-7723\" src=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Days-365237-HUB-Bath-tiles-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"93\" height=\"93\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">bathroom tiles<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>\u2022\u00a0 <\/strong>Since I am trying to become a reliable protector of Mother Earth, I was pleased to discover the new <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cincinnatirecyclingandreusehub.org\/\">Cincinnati Recycling &amp; Reuse Hub<\/a><\/span> in my community. It takes things that my local curbside recycling will not \u2013 like clear plastic clam shells, bathroom tiles, electronics, printer cartridges, plastic CD cases and, YES \u2013 Styrofoam and molded foam packaging. I was ready for the big dump.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Days-365237-HUB-styro-SUPs-printer-cart.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-7721\" src=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Days-365237-HUB-styro-SUPs-printer-cart-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Good news:<\/strong> Yes, the HUB took all of the above, <strong><em>except<\/em><\/strong> for my foam takeout food containers \u2013 and I had quite a few of them. Apparently, they accept Styrofoam and molded foam packaging but not takeout food containers \u2013 at least not yet.<\/p>\n<p>So, I need to get smarter on what the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Foam_food_container#:~:text=Foam%20take%2Dout%20containers%20are,company%20logo%20or%20other%20message.\">differences are between Styrofoam, expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam, building insulation foam, foam takeout containers<\/a><\/span>, etc. I had previously lumped all these things into the same category \u2013 a problem to recycle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Days-365237-Habitat-Reuse-Ctr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7732\" src=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Days-365237-Habitat-Reuse-Ctr-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"114\" height=\"114\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Days-365237-Goodwill-toilet-seat.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Days-365237-Goodwill-toilet-seat-275x300.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"102\" height=\"112\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Days-365237-Goodwill-waste-basket.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7731\" src=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Days-365237-Goodwill-waste-basket-272x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"99\" height=\"109\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Days-365237-Goodwill-waste-basket-272x300.jpg 272w, https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Days-365237-Goodwill-waste-basket.jpg 385w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 99px) 100vw, 99px\" \/><\/a>Meanwhile, I balanced out my disappointment in not finding a happy home for my foam containers by finding that a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.habitat.org\/restores\">Habitat for Humanity ReStore<\/a><\/span> was only 10 minutes away and could use my bathroom light fixture. The nearby Goodwill happily took my plastic waste basket and old but functional toilet seat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3 Lessons Learned:<br \/>\n<\/strong>1. Recycling is an important back up solution, but it takes time to learn the ropes.<br \/>\n2. Persistence and humility are worthy virtues to cultivate.<br \/>\n3. Keep googling and consulting with experts. I\u2019m not too old to learn some new-to-me science.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the end of the story. I welcome knowledgeable people adding to this post and will follow up with more factual information as I learn more myself.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m not irresponsible.
