It all started when our son who lives in Singapore came home for a 3-week visit. This meant that most of our family and a lot of his friends visited our home. Following is how they helped me prune more stuff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1: Ask our kids to take <em>their<\/em> stuff<\/strong> stored at our house. This didn\u2019t get far because most of them were flying home and didn\u2019t have extra space in their homes anyway. At least they identified stuff to continue to save and stuff we could give away or throw away.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-elec.-cassette-tape-giveaways-Luke.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-elec.-cassette-tape-giveaways-Luke-205x300.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"81\" height=\"119\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-puzzle-giveaways.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8424\" src=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-puzzle-giveaways-217x300.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"85\" height=\"117\" \/><\/a>Step 2: Ask their friends.<\/strong> Since our Singapore son was in town many of his local friends visited. One was a jigsaw puzzle enthusiast, so she took 6 puzzles. Another took 11 cassette tapes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3: Prune our kids\u2019 electronics.<\/strong> (For my purposes I\u2019m distinguishing between &#8220;technology&#8221; and &#8220;electronics.&#8221; In my blog post <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/365256-pruning-technology\/\">Pruning Technology<\/a><\/span>, I deal with pruning <em>information technology<\/em> such as use of email and other social media. Here I\u2019m using electronics in the sense of <em>electronic hardware<\/em> such as DVDs, CDs, and tapes. Our kids released the following electronics for recycling:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-elec.-CDs-to-Hub-new-used.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8421\" src=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-elec.-CDs-to-Hub-new-used-300x193.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-elec.-CDs-to-Hub-new-used-300x193.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-elec.-CDs-to-Hub-new-used-768x495.gif 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-elec.-empty-CDs-66.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-elec.-empty-CDs-66-300x174.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-elec.-empty-CDs-66-300x174.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-elec.-empty-CDs-66-768x445.gif 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u2022 28 DVDs<br \/>\n\u2022 33 new CDs<br \/>\n\u2022 23 used CDs<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0 \u00a09 Zip Drives<br \/>\n\u2022 42 Cassette tapes<br \/>\n\u2022 66 empty CD cases<br \/>\n(You may wonder how anyone collects 66 empty CD cases?<br \/>\nAnswer: I hang many old CDs on wire frames in my garden to dissuade deer from eating my vegetables. Other CDs are lost or broken.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4: Take stuff to new homes<br \/>\n<\/strong>ELECTRONICS:<br \/>\nIn the Cincinnati area the best place is the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cincinnatirecyclingandreusehub.org\/\">Cincinnati Recycling and Reuse Hub<\/a><\/span>. I took all of the above former \u201ctreasures\u201d to the HUB which is a non-profit organization. They charge $1 per pound to cover their cost of shipping to <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greendisk.com\/gdsite\/Default.aspx\">Green Disc<\/a><\/span> in Washington State. It cost me $22. It was easier and cheaper than packing and mailing all the electronics myself. For an earlier blog on electronic recycling <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/365248-post-christmas-decluttering\/\">click here<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t live in the greater Cincinnati area or don\u2019t have similar local electronics resources, other recycling options are:<br \/>\n\u2022 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greendisk.com\/gdsite\/Default.aspx\">Green Disc<\/a><\/span> \u2013 mail in program located in Sammamish, Washington<br \/>\n\u2022 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.backthruthefuture.com\/free-cddvd-recycling\/\">Backthruthefuture<\/a><\/span> \u2013 mail in program located in Franklin, NJ 07416<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/earth911.com\/\">Earth 911<\/a><\/span> \u2013 is an all-purpose recycling resource with many ideas on how and where to recycle.<br \/>\n\u2022 Google \u201cWhere to take electronics for recycling\u201d (Big box stores such as <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.staples.com\/deals\/it-s-recycling-day-every-day\/BI3000592\">Staples<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bestbuy.com\/site\/services\/recycling\/pcmcat149900050025.c?id=pcmcat149900050025\">Best Buy<\/a><\/span> also take many electronics for recycling.)<a href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-Barbies.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-Barbies-209x300.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>TOYS\/DOLLS:<br \/>\nI\u00a0had been saving dolls for visiting grandkids. Even they were not interested so I took them to a local Thrift Store (<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/beconcerned.org\/\">Be Concerned<\/a><\/span>). Certainly there are similar places near you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-books-to-Friends-of-library.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8419\" src=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-books-to-Friends-of-library-228x300.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"97\" height=\"127\" \/><\/a>BOOKS:<br \/>\nOur kids said I could give away an 18 book children\u2019s encyclopedia set and 3 reference books. Having earned $.28 cents from taking previous no longer needed books to a half price bookstore, I took these directly to the public library so their <em>Friends of the Library<\/em> group could sell them to fund library functions. For other book options, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/365260-pruning-books\/\">click here<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>FURNITURE:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-empty-file-cabinets-2.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8423\" src=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-empty-file-cabinets-2-300x257.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-empty-file-cabinets-2-300x257.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Days-365261-empty-file-cabinets-2-768x658.gif 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nSince these recently emptied file cabinets were too big for visitors to take or for us to deliver, I scheduled a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/satruck.org\/donate\/choose\">Salvation Army pickup<\/a><\/span>.
