Our metropolitan curbside recycling service picks up metal cans, glass and plastic bottles\/jugs, and paper and cartons weekly. Good. Done.<br \/>\nBUT, the city doesn\u2019t take plastic bags, bubble wrap, small plastic bottles, etc. I had collected quite a few of these items and wanted to be a responsible recycler rather than just dumping them in the garbage can.<br \/>\nSoooo, time to make another trip to the HUB (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cincinnatirecyclingandreusehub.org\/\">Cincinnati Recycling and Reuse Hub<\/a>). Hopefully your community has a similar free resource. I packed my car trunk with 2+ months worth of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>50+ plastic bags<a href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/365284-Hub-container-May-23-2024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-9015\" src=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/365284-Hub-container-May-23-2024-300x298.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/365284-Hub-container-May-23-2024-300x298.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/365284-Hub-container-May-23-2024-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/365284-Hub-container-May-23-2024.jpg 476w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>plastic bubble wrap<\/li>\n<li>15 #1 plastic tubs<\/li>\n<li>3 large Styrofoam packing blocks<\/li>\n<li>3 aluminum foil containers<\/li>\n<li>20+ small plastic medicine bottles<\/li>\n<li>50+ small plastic caps<\/li>\n<li>2 non-working pens<\/li>\n<li>Half used make-up that I don\u2019t use any more<\/li>\n<li>a pair of wearable but extra sneakers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then I drove to a local thrift shop and dropped off a skirt and a pair of slacks that I seldom wear. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Days-365284-skirtpants.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8998\" src=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Days-365284-skirtpants-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Days-365284-skirtpants-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/www.susanvogt.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Days-365284-skirtpants.jpg 494w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My home is certainly not yet clear of unneeded stuff, but it feels rewarding to be making progress.\u00a0The point is to keep acting to be environmentally responsible with packing material and extra stuff.<\/p>\n<p>The next step for me is to more vigorously evaluate what I really need for everyday life. There are still a lot of belongings that<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I seldom use<\/li>\n<li>I\u2019ve been saving for the kids but they may not want it<\/li>\n<li>or that I might need in an emergency. But\u2026Hey, such an emergency hasn\u2019t come up in perhaps 10 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s sobering to me to think I have extra clothes that I don\u2019t wear, camping gear that I haven\u2019t used in years, books that I don\u2019t plan to re-read, toys that the grandkids have outgrown, etc. Yet some people don\u2019t have necessary clothes right now, don\u2019t know what fun camping can be, let their kids watch too much TV because there aren\u2019t appealing toys to play with.
